Statement by Mr. Gregory Riviere, Caretaker of the Dominica Labour Party for the Marigot
Constituency and Former Government Minister
The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Government remains fully committed to the well-being of all residents and constituents of Marigot. We acknowledge the concerns raised by the community regarding excessive dust and road damage caused by the movement of heavy equipment transporting materials from quarry sites in Hatton Garden. These challenges are a direct result of the ongoing Dominica International Airport development—a transformative national project that will position Dominica for unparalleled economic growth, increased connectivity, and new opportunities for all Dominicans.
While progress inevitably comes with challenges, we remain steadfast in ensuring that the concerns of residents and commuters are addressed promptly. As such, I will be present in the Sams Gutter area tomorrow, February 11, 2025, to meet directly with residents and listen to their grievances. I share the view that swift action is needed to mitigate the dust and road conditions affecting Marigot and its surrounding areas.
Immediate Actions Being Taken:
● Enhanced Dust Control Measures – A water truck had been previously assigned in
January to wet affected areas regularly, but operations had temporarily ceased. Moving
forward, strict instructions have been given for the road to be watered at least three
times daily to minimize dust pollution and improve air quality for residents.
● Road Repairs & Maintenance – The Public Works Department will commence
patching damaged road sections, beginning at Melville Hall tomorrow. These repairs will enhance road safety for both motorists and pedestrians who have been affected by the wear and tear caused by heavy equipment movement.
We sincerely thank the people of Marigot and surrounding communities for their patience and understanding as Dominica undertakes its largest and most ambitious infrastructure project to date. The construction of our first international airport is a nation-building endeavor that will bring far-reaching benefits, including job creation, increased tourism, and expanded business opportunities. We recognize that progress often requires sacrifice, but we assure you that your concerns are being heard and addressed.
As we continue on this historic journey, I encourage all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation. Together, we can ensure that the development of the Dominica International Airport remains a symbol of progress and prosperity for generations to come.
