Cultural Elder Ras Mo Moses has passed.

Of mixed native American and African ancestry, Ras Mo was born Desmond Delmance Marcel Moses on the Caribbean island of Dominica, where his childhood was steeped in village cultural traditions. He began hand drumming at age five and excels at rhythms from the Eastern and French Creole Caribbean (Calypso, Piké, Kumina Nyabinghi, Quadrille, Lapo Kabwit, Belè, Yenvalo, Gwoka, etc.). He has added folk styles and stories from other islands and Africa to his performance and teaching repertoires over the years.

Ras Mo was a poet, composer, singer, storyteller, teacher, and facilitator who uses performing arts for violence prevention, gender and race equality, community-building, and social justice. He has designed and led community and school programs in the United States, Canada, England, and the Caribbean and is a certified Remo HealthRhythms facilitator. He has published three books of poetry and two albums of music. His interactive curriculum project, Pink and Blue, explores gender socialization, class, and masculinity through original songs, poems, and lively group activities.

May his legacy live on. And may he rest in eternal peace.
