    Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says his government stands in solidarity with the families, loved ones and those affected by the deaths of Daniel Langlois and Dominique Merchand, owners of Coulibri Ridge Resort. The two were discovered dead in Gallion at the beginning of month, and two men have since been arrested.   • First Official Overseas Engagement of Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton, DAH, President of the Dominica

    Roseau, Dominica, December 18, 2023: The President of Dominica, Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton, DAH, resumed official duties on Friday, 15th December 2023 following a two-day visit to the French Department of Guadeloupe, marking her first official overseas engagement as President of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Her Excellency left the State on Wednesday, 13th December 2023 for Guadeloupe, upon an invitation that was extended to her in her capacity as the first female President of Dominica of Kalinago descent, by Dr. Pierre Sainte-Luce, a prominent businessman and President of the Arawak Beach Resort, to serve as special guest at the unveiling of a fresco located on the main wall of the four-star resort, which symbolizes the establishment of close and cordial relations between the Arawak Beach Resort and the Kalinago community of Guadeloupe and Dominica. The Unveiling Ceremony took place at the Arawak Beach Resort on Thursday, 14th December 2023. Kalinago Chief Lorenzo Sanford was also present at the said ceremony along with representatives of the Kalina Gwada Association. Whilst in Guadeloupe, Her Excellency had the opportunity to meet and hold discussions with senior government officials of Guadeloupe, various media personnel, cultural and medical professionals, entrepreneurs and the Kalina Gwada Association. This visit to Guadeloupe will help to further strengthen the very friendly and fruitful relations which have long existed between Dominica and the neighbouring French territory of Guadeloupe, and also provides the opportunity to explore new and better means to improve and deepen bilateral cooperation of mutual benefit in areas such as arts and culture, health, trade, tourism and entrepreneurship. Her Excellency was accompanied on her official overseas engagement by her spouse Gilbert; President’s Aide-de-Camp, Inspector Valda Powell and President’s Secretary, Miss Donille Blackmoore.   • Dominican motorists will see no increase in the price of petroleum products before the end 2023

    Trade Director Mathan Walter says on December 4th, 2023 prices for all petroleum products were decreased across the board. Walter states that previous increases were due to failures by some OPEC members to meet production targets, and a sizable inventory bill in the United States' Crude stock reserves. These he says compounded and allowed for a decrease in the price of Crude oil, which is used to produce gasoline and diesel used here on island.   • UWP has reelected Dr Thomson Fontaine as its leader

    Dr Thomson Fontaine defeated Clement Marcellin 64votes to 59 for leadership at its Delegates Conference on Sunday. Marcellin declined to seek reelection for the position of Deputy Leader as he felt in the last term enough was not done. He has also cited the absenteeism of Dr Thomson Fontaine which made it strenuous on his part to continue in that role. Attorney. Ronald Charles was elected unopposed on the weekend.   • AIDAMAR VESSEL MAKES FIRST OF THREE CALLS TO DOMINICA: BOOSTING THE 2023/24 CRUISE SEASON

    DOMINICA, (December 18, 2023)- Today, Monday, December 18th, 2023, Dominica welcomes its ninth (9th) inaugural cruise call of the season. The MV AIDAmar, a prestigious vessel from AIDA Cruises, has docked at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, bringing an influx of two thousand six hundred and eighty-six (2,686) cruise passengers to the island’s shore. A plaque exchange ceremony was held aboard the ship from 10:00 am to celebrate the ship's maiden voyage to the island. This occasion marks the first of three (3) calls that AIDAmar will make to the island during the 2023/2024 cruise season. The AIDAmar, an Icarus-class cruise ship, was meticulously built at Meyer Werft for AIDA Cruises. She is the sixth (6th) ship in the sphinx series, preceded by her sister ships AIDAdiva, AIDAbella, AIDAluna, AIDAblu, and AIDAsol, and followed by AIDAstella. AIDAmar was delivered to the shipping company by Meyer Werft on May 3rd, 2012. She stretches an impressive two hundred and fifty-three (253) meters in length and boasts a carrying capacity of two thousand six hundred and eighty-six (2,686) passengers and six hundred and nine (609) crew members. Passengers of the MV AIDAmar are expected to immerse themselves in tours to the island’s signature sites, which include the Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls, and Mero Beach, and engage in snorkeling and whale-watching tours, among other attractions. For the 2023/2024 cruise season, two hundred and twenty-two (222) cruise calls are projected. These calls will potentially introduce over three hundred and sixty thousand (360,000) passengers to Dominica's unique allure. Of these anticipated calls, thirteen (13) are expected to be inaugural. As of December 5th, Dominica has already warmly received a total of thirty-five (35) cruise calls. These ships have collectively brought a total of fifty-two thousand nine hundred and eighty-six (52,986) passengers to the island, with forty thousand four hundred and thirty-one (40,431) disembarking and twenty-two thousand three hundred and sixty-nine (22,369) engaging in organized tours. The Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) is actively advocating for the cooperation of all tourism stakeholders in ensuring a welcoming and enjoyable experience for cruise visitors throughout the 2023/2024 cruise season. The MV Costa Fortuna, a vessel from Costa Cruise, is slated to dock at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, bringing an influx of two thousand seven hundred two (2,702) cruise passengers to the island's shore. A plaque exchange ceremony will be held aboard the ship from 11:30 am to honor the ship's maiden visit. This event signifies the first of two (2) calls that Costa Fortuna will make to the island during the 2023/2024 cruise season. The Costa Fortuna, built in 2003, is an impressive cruise ship for Costa Crociere. The ship, constructed on the same platform as the Destiny class of Carnival Cruise Lines, echoes the charm of the Italian steamships of the yesteryears. Models of these ships are displayed in the ship's public spaces. The ship spans an impressive two hundred and seventy-two (272) meters in length. It has a substantial carrying capacity of two thousand seven hundred two (2,702) passengers and thousand ninety (1,090) crew members. The MV Costa Fortuna passengers are anticipated to embark on tours to the island's signature sites. All the countries in the region hold a special place in my heart, and the experiences I've had here will forever shape my outlook on diplomacy, collaboration, and the resilience of communities facing challenges. Throughout my time here, I've witnessed firsthand the unwavering determination of each country as they grapple with their unique set of challenges. The strength and resilience of the people of the Eastern Caribbean in the face of adversity, whether it be the impact of climate change or reviving economies after the pandemic, have been nothing short of inspiring. As nations navigate economic uncertainties, environmental concerns, and social issues, it's been humbling to witness the unwavering spirit and dedication to progress. One of the key highlights of my tenure has been the pride I've felt in the United States collaborating with sovereign democratic states across the region. Our shared commitment to enhancing security, bolstering economic development, and promoting democratic values has been the cornerstone of our partnership. We've worked together to address security challenges, improve disaster preparedness, and foster economic growth, recognizing that these issues know no borders.
